Trainer Jim Campbell had an unbeaten, champion 2 year old trotting colt in his barn in 2002 by the name of Broadway Hall. Until he sustained a career ending injury, he was considered the pre-season choice to win the Hambletonian in 2003. Campbell has been in the sport long enough to know that it is performance, not potential that pays bills and that’s what Broadway Hall did in 2002. Broadway Hall had nine starts during 2002 and won all of them including the Breeders Crown, amassing earnings of $436,790. This team knows what it is like to stand in the winner’s circle, having experienced that thrill with Tagliabue in 1995, who is also standing stud at Fashion Farms in Pennsylvania. In addition to Broadway Hall, there was Andover Hall, Banker Hall, Conway Hall, the sire of Broadway Hall and Angus Hall, all of whom have produced exceptional winners. There is no reason not to believe that Broadway Hall will follow in their footsteps and produce some outstanding offspring. In 2002 Conway’s colts and fillies won $1,682,517 and there is no reason , looking at the freshman products of 2002, that he will not equal or exceed that amount in 2003. Broadway Hall and Pizza Dolce accounted for almost $900,00 of that total as freshmen. With the eventuality of slots coming to Pennsylvania, breeders to Broadway Hall have to believe that the state program will result in the most lucrative purses in the country. The mere fact that Broadway Hall will be one of the most sought after stallions in the state makes the opportunity of his success as a sire unparalleled. Broadway Hall finished second in his first two qualifiers at the Meadowlands, trotting in 2:03 in the first and 2:00.2 the second time. On July 6th, Broadway set all the fractions in his qualifier, winning in 1:59.3. His final two furloughs were in 27.4. His first stake race was the Reynolds at Pocono, where Wally Hennessy drove him to a win in 2:00.1. Again Hennessey drove him to a 2:01 win at the Arden Downs at the Meadows. Jay Picciano won with him at Lexington in 2:03 and Don Irvine followed the next week for the elimination of the Kentucky sired event in 1:58.1. The son of Conway Hall was the heavy favorite in the $100,000 final which he proceeded to win by 3 ¼ lengths in 1:57.3. Broadway went on to win the elimination for the Breeders Crown in 1:57 and the final in 1:57.2 and the rest is history. He became one of the rarest specimens in harness racing history, an unbeaten freshman trotter!
